There is probably more information here than you probably felt
you ever needed or wanted to know. But we hope it provides a basic
understanding of the process and how safe "online ordering"
really is.
What Is A Secure Server?
A "secure" web server provides for encrypted communication
between a web browser and the system where a web site is located.
This prevents third parties from being able to intercept these communications
and understand the information being exchanged (for example, credit
card numbers or passwords).
How Does It Work?
The server software employs something called the secure socket layers
protocol (SSL). This protocol allows data to be encrypted when being
sent between your browser and our server. All our form processing
is done using the latest SSL technology with strong 128 bit encryption.
The server has a unique certificate that is assigned to it by a
third party "Certificate Authority" (CA) like Verisign
or Thawte.
That certificate is basically proof that we are who we say we are
and that our server is legitimately ours (as opposed to a server
that some third party is trying to falsify as ours). When someone
connects to our secure server using an SSL-enabled browser, the
server signs its certificate with the CA's private key, and then
presents this to the browser. The browser then uses the CA's public
key to try to decrypt this signed certificate. If it can, a trusted
relationship is established between the browser and server and encrypted
communications commence.
How Do I Know It's Working?
You can use most Web browsers, including Netscape Navigator/Communicator
and Internet Explorer. You will know that you are in secure mode
by:
a) Netscape browser - in the bottom left corner a broken key becomes
whole and the key's background turns blue. A blue line may also
appear around the browser screen. Later versions use a padlock.
b) Microsoft Internet Explorer - a lock appears in the lower right
corner of the browser.
This technology ensures you the safest possible transaction method
for your purchase.
What If I Still Don't Trust It?
If you are uncomfortable using your credit card online please read
this excerpt from an Internet
World article and then decide. If your browser isn't capable
of handling secure forms or if you still just don't want to use
your credit card, you have other options. You may place an order
using either of the following options:
1) Telephone 011-1-805-534-1120
2)
Standard Product Order Form (No billing information required)
If you use the Standard Product Order Form, you will be contacted
to confirm the order and payment method.
That's really all there is to it!
